How to read a sponsorship listing

Eight lines worth finding before you apply: the route, the sponsor, the salary, the fees, the start date, the tie to the employer, the family rules, and the refusal plan.

A good sponsorship listing can be read in a few minutes and still answer the questions that decide whether you apply. Use this as a checklist against any role on GJWV, and against roles you find elsewhere.

The eight lines

The route. “Sponsorship” is not a visa. Look for a name: Skilled Worker, EU Blue Card, Skills in Demand (subclass 482), Employment Pass, H-1B, Accredited Employer Work Visa. If the name is missing, the employer has not chosen a route yet.

The sponsor’s status. Some countries publish a register of licensed or accredited employers. Where a register exists, a serious employer will not mind you checking it. Where it does not, ask when they last filed a case like yours.

The salary, with the currency and the period. Floors change, and some routes compare the offer with a going rate or a market rate. A range is fine. A range with no currency is not.

Who pays. Say which fees the employer pays, and which ones the law requires them to pay. A request that you pay the employer’s levy, or that you repay recruitment costs if you leave, is a reason to pause.

When you can start. The lawful start is after the permission is granted, not the day you land as a visitor. A listing that needs you on site next Monday, from abroad, is not a sponsorship plan.

How tightly the visa is tied to this employer, this city, and this job. A promotion or a transfer can be a new filing.

Family. Partner and child rules are not a footnote. Some routes allow dependants, some restrict them, and some set an income level before a partner can work. The listing should say what the employer knows, and you should confirm the rest.

The refusal plan. If the file is refused or a lottery is missed, does the offer survive, get deferred, or end? People can live with any of the three. They cannot live with silence.

A practical way to apply

Write a short note that mentions the route by name and one requirement you already meet. Attach the document that proves it, not a cloud of certificates. If the listing is an example on GJWV, the page says so. Example listings show the format. They are not openings.

Keep a copy of the listing. If the route or the salary changes between the advert and the contract, you want the earlier version in front of you.

Not legal or immigration advice. Rules, fees, and salary floors change. Check the authority that issues the visa before you rely on a listing or a guide.
